ABOUT US

We have nothing against the Norman Rockwell portrayal of family — those old-timey gatherings of people with the same last name drinking lemonade on porch swings — it's just that there's something else happening these days in the way humans team up to go through life. The Urban Family for which this brewery is named did come together on a porch, but it was around strong beers and pale ales consumed on our rental house's ratty sofa, which we had dragged outside to take advantage of spring Sundays in DC.

This creativity and flexibility of how to live and define a life characterizes what we do at Urban Family Brewing: If someone you met through a Craigslist roommate ad can become your brother then you can definitely put lavender in a witbier.

The Family

Urban Family Brewing - David PowellDavid Powell — Growing up in the Midwest, Dave knew early on that educating was his path in life. He took off for the big city in New York to teach and grow up, which in turn led him to China, Washington DC and eventually Seattle. At his current day job he works for one of the country's foremost educational reform non-profits. And of course he's a lifelong lover of beer and has traveled the country and world seeking out breweries.

Urban Family Brewing - Timothy CzarnetzkiTimothy Czarnetzki — Tim relocated to Seattle a few years ago on a quest to open an innovative brewery that would utilize local products and could meet local demands for high-end beer. Upon being introduced to Ballard, he immediately fell in love and knew he had found home.

Urban Family Brewing - Sean BowmanSean Bowman — Sean is the brain behind our all of our information technology: when we tweet, he tweets. Originally from New York, he has also spent time in Florida, but the Northwest and its mighty ales have won out.
